Project
Details: The Brisbane
River floating pedestrian/cycleway is constructed along the New
Farm section of the Brisbane River.
Burchill
VDM Involvement: Burchill
VDM were commissioned to undertake a feasibility study for the
proposal by the Brisbane City Council.
Previous project
experience indicated that the construction of such a walkway was
feasible and had significant aesthetic and planning advantages,
however the issue of potential walkway movement under wave action
within the Brisbane River was of primary concern from a user
viewpoint.
To this end,
significant emphasis was given to the determination of wave
(vessel wake) conditions within the river and the likely resultant
walkway movement response to such waves.
Full scale dynamic
response modelling was also utilised to establish that for a
variety of wave conditions, and an appropriately designed floating
structure, the walkway response to expected wave conditions was
well within acceptable movement and acceleration limits considered
acceptable for pedestrian, novice cyclist and rollerblader comfort
and safety.
3D computer generated images were
also produced to provide the Council and the public with an idea
of the project's visual impact.
