CAPABILITIES
Burchill VDM has completed a range of
innovative traffic and transportation studies in Australia and
internationally. Our international traffic and transportation involvement
in heavily congested Asian cities has required Burchill VDM to keep
abreast of the latest advances in traffic engineering and transportation
planning methods so as to provide the most efficient solutions to problems
within these highly complex transportation systems.
This technical background is supplemented
by the firm's significant Queensland experience, being established on the
Gold Coast since the 1970's. The multi-disciplinary nature of the firm
ensures that traffic and transportation planning projects are able to
receive specialist input from land use planners, urban designers, road
designers and civil infrastructure engineers when required.
In addition to these skills, Burchill VDM
is renowned for high quality report presentation using the latest CAD, GIS
and transportation modelling software available. In particular, our
3-Dimensional graphical presentations allow for traffic or transportation
concepts to be visualised as they would be constructed, thereby providing
clients and the public (in the public consultation forum) opportunity of
"virtual reality" in assessing the implications of a particular
project.
Specific areas of traffic engineering and
transportation planning experience which staff at Burchill VDM have
developed are :
Burchill VDM have capabilities in the
following transportation planning areas:
- Public transport system analysis
and planning - public transport system structure development;
patronage forecasting; mode integration studies; fare systems;
interchange design; LRT and heavy rail corridor evaluation; bus
service integration studies; land use/public transport integration
studies.

- Multi-modal transportation
modelling - transportation modelling for network and systems;
mode choice modelling; development of models for policy testing and
evaluation; conventional 4 step modelling; trip chaining models.
- Travel demand management
- Transportation economics
- developer contribution schemes; cost benefit analysis;
infrastructure prioritisation schemes; LRT and bus economic
feasibility studies; area pricing and parking pricing schemes.
- Transportation/land use
interaction - land use/transportation structure plans; land
use capacity analysis.
- Road hierarchy and network
analysis - functional road hierarchies; access management
plans, future road infrastructure requirements; network operation.
- Transportation system management
- intelligent transport systems; integrated ticketing schemes; dynamic
signal coordination and control systems.
- Freight movement studies
- freight strategy development; goods movement modelling; road freight
route choice studies.
- Surveys and data analysis -
interview surveys; telephone surveys; travel diaries.
- Burchill VDM has capabilities in the
following traffic engineering areas:
- Intersection capacity analysis
- using Austroads guidelines and SIDRA; priority, roundabout and
signalised intersection analysis as well as investigation of grade
separated interchange operation.
- Intersection concept and detail
design - selection of optimum intersection configuration;
concept and detailed engineering design.
- Traffic signal coordination
analysis - using TRANSYT, coordinating one and two
dimensional signal networks; development of distance-time diagrams
(green-band diagrams).
- Local area traffic studies and
management schemes - "rat running" studies; local
street speeding and heavy vehicle impacts; design of traffic
management devices and area-wide schemes.
- Accessibility/mobility studies -
mobility needs studies; local area accessibility versus permeability;
road hierarchy issues;

- Development impact assessment -
road network, public transport, cycling and walking needs and impacts;
determination of access location and configuration.
- Parking studies -
activity centre parking strategies; supply/demand analysis; area
pricing strategies; public consultation; parking lot design.
- Pedestrian and cyclist movement
studies - selection of appropriate pedestrian crossing
location and form; pedestrian accessibility studies in activity
centres; pedestrianisation schemes; cycleway network strategies;
bikeway location, alignment and detailed design.
- Road design - road
alignment and cross section concept and detailed design.
- Public consultation -
facilitation of community workshops and meetings, work with focus
groups, identification and consultation with stakeholder groups
including relevant authorities, land ownership data and preparation of
relevant information media for public displays.
- Safety audits and accident
analysis
- Expert witness - planning
and environment court for development related appeals.
